Bulletin Buddy Note-Taking Form (also at front desk)

At any time don't be surprised if a new member offers to bump a designated Bulletin Buddy for 50/50 sales or note-taking opportunities. We know you will happily step aside to enable their progress against new member orientation program (red badge).

If you wish to be added to the rotation please contact Nancy Thornton.

If a date you've been assigned is not convenient, we appreciate your initiative to exchange with a fellow Rotarian.

Valuable Emergency Tips from our Feb 3 meeting

Gone are the days of the old warning sirens. During an emergency, Community Notifications will be conducted utilizing the CodeRED mass notification system. During the August wind storm advance alerts were issued 36 minutes in advance of its strike. Sign up is quick and easy; alerts are issued via text, email or phone call.

Smart911 is a critical service for 911 Dispatchers to help you when/if you cannot communicate. This secured system captures essential information such as where emergency fuel shutoffs are at your house; upload of photos for identification of you, family members, even your pets; emergency contact information; organ donation information; automobile license plate/drivers license number info. Make it easier for them to help you in the event of an emergency.

Education Changes Lives - And You Can Be Part of It!

Our meeting this week introduced the details of our next global service project--helping build a 2-classroom school in Malawi. Kathleen Guy shared these details:
  • The problem: The target area has only 1 public high school which is too far away for many kids to attend daily. We want to expand educational opportunities for area kids by helping to build a 2-classroom school.
  • Malawi is the poorest country in the world; their language is English, the area is safe, stable and peaceful
  • Our trip is planned for July 2017 after the rainy season is over; temps in Malawi in July are 70-80 degrees (must be Fahrenheit!!)
  • Project is in collaboration with Warm Hearts Foundation and World of Difference
  • Tammy Tarsa will be a scout and plans to go in July 2016; we are looking for another scout to take the trip in July 2016
  • Jay spoke eloquently about the Honduras trip as we are seeking 100% participation which doesn’t mean you have to travel, just get involved somehow; Peter also provided details on the trip
  • Cost will be around $4000 for the two week trip; the group will go on a safari over the weekend in the middle
  • Our Global Service committee will help with fundraising, including a yet to be determined event this summer
  • Individual fundraising is encouraged; the match we got for Honduras is not available for this trip.
  • The committee is looking for a financial commitment this summer. Amount and schedule will be finalized soon.
  • We have a legal opinion that the entire trip can be considered a tax deduction (please consider this an unofficial position and seek your own counsel based on your own circumstances).

Win Big or Go Home!

It's pretty much a win - win - win proposition. Craig is the keeper of the tickets.

Prize drawings will take place at 3:30 p.m. on March 11, 2016

Flying solo benefits from a Rotary safety net!

Thank you!

Some people make a conscious decision to never have a life partner. I'm not one of those--I've just ended up that way (so far). I've always been okay with that but, last Tuesday, I'll admit it sure would have been nice if that hadn't been the case. I could have simply turned to my honey and said "please handle this."

I had spent the two previous nights with cell phone close by in case I had to call 911 for a ride. I finally decided maybe the gut wrenching pain just wasn't going to go away. I had already switched my heating system over from the external wood burner to the propane boiler. Slinging logs onto the fire just wasn't in the cards. So at 6am in true Nancy form, I let Roland out and fed him, sent an email to my manager and put an auto reply on my work email, packed a bag with personal items (device chargers at top of list) in case the outcome was 'Welcome to the Ritz Carlton Munson," and then I drove myself to town where every bump twisted that knife in my gut.

After hearing I needed to be admitted . . . with no significant other, no siblings/family in state, my longest term friends at least 4+ hours away. my local 'go to' friend in Florida for the month . . . perhaps it comes as no great surprise that the first message I sent out was to Craig Weckler and Gary Brown. HELP - I need my Rotary family!

Join us for a night on the town at our Winter Social

Our annual winter social is always a fun evening out with our fabulous Sunrise Rotary friends!

We are repeating last year's approach of holding our Winter Social downtown as part of restaurant week--Saturday, February 27th. We would like RSVPs by February 22nd.

The Franklin has once again offered us the privacy of their upper level dining room.

Cocktails at 6pm

Dinner at 7pm

Please sign up online (see link in our Events calendar) so we can give them an accurate headcount.

For those that are new to the club, we have a fun silent auction at our winter social. Members donate items which often include donations of fun experiences, like VIc & Georgia's Lebanese dinner. Proceeds of the silent auction are directed to Rotary Foundation Annual Fund to help us achieve the required $100 per capita annual giving level making us eligible for matching grants. If you have something you'd like to donate, please contact Nancy.

  2. Our winter social is February 27th at The Franklin. Cost is $25 plus beverages, paid directly to the restaurant. It's always a fun time, but sign-ups are a bit slow. Please RSVP by February 22nd at the latest.
  3. Kathy Bussell has distributed Rotary Show Ad Sales packages. It's important to note that this is an important fundraiser for our club, with proceeds benefiting local service projects. The three Traverse City-based Rotary clubs share equitably in the net proceeds of the show based on % of ad sales income contributed by the club. Jeff Buday mentioned this is typically 60 to 70 cents on the dollar. Craig has materials for those that have sold ads in the past.
  4. The Youth Exchange students are looking forward to their Winter Festival held in Wawa starting February 18th. This event is where they will learn of the country they'll be living in for their exchange year. Needless to say, they are pretty excited!
  5. Craig mentioned that we've received resignations in the past month or two from TIm Gillen, Samantha Konopko and Kelly Ignace due to work/schedule conflicts.
  6. We've received THANK YOU letters from S.T.E.P. and the Salvation Army for our holiday donation and bell ringing efforts (respectively).
  7. There is a Career Fair scheduled at NMC on March 3rd. Please contact Lindsey if you are interested in lending support.
  8. The annual dinner to raise funds for our outbound exchange students is scheduled for April 12th at 6:30pm (Boathouse Restaurant). TIckets are on sale now. Touch base with any of our outbounds or members of the Youth Exchange committee.
Program:
Steve Francis introduced our speaker, Gregg Bird, Emergency Management Supervisor for Grand Traverse County. Steve came to know Gregg during the August 2015 wind storm and credited him for his outstanding service during that local emergency disaster which led to his recognition as Michigan Emergency Management Association's Emergency Coordinator of the Year for jurisdictions over 60,000 population! It was Gregg's work that led to the Governor's first-ever declaration of a disaster.

Gregg started his career as a paramedic when he was 18 years old, and was employed in Fire Services for 25 years. During that time he chose to volunteer as part of the Katrina Hurricane response team working in Mississippi. He offered an incredible visual - imagine looking out the Elks Club window and seeing a 32 foot wall of water traveling at over 100 mph. That was the impact of Katrina; it flattened towns and moved everything 10 to 15 miles inland. He feels he worked for the best of the best in emergency response, and he brought that experience to his new position in Traverse City.

When referring to the August wind storm he emphasized how important it was to complete a rapid damage assessment in order to file for emergency relief funds. Best quote, which he brought from his Mississippi experience: "Son . . . you always want to be the dog wagging the tail and not the tail wagging the dog." It was his quick coordination of this assessment (completed within 60 hours of allowable 72 hour window) that led to over $250k funding to the county, Traverse City and Acme.

Gregg has a seemingly endless list of duties:
  • Create & maintain emergency plan
  • Collect and distribute school drills (fire, wind, lock down)
  • Coordinate resources during times of emergency
  • Oversee 50 HazMat sites
  • Serve as record keeper for Federal grants
  • Manage deployment of mobile command trailer
  • Manage the county-wide emergency notification "CodeRed" alert system
  • Conduct hazard risk assessments for all critical infrastructure
  • Create emergency plans for all our major events
and on, and on, and on . . .
