Sunrise at Sunset

Don't forget that today (January 28th) is our monthly happy hour gathering . . . this month at Sorrelina's located at 120 South Park Street across from the parking garage, between State and Front Streets.

We start gathering 5pm and after . . . no host . . . bring friends . . . let's have some fun!

Bulletin Buddies

Date Bulletin Buddies Invocation
February 3 Julane Underhill & Chris Rogers Tammy Tarsa
February 10 Angelo Vozza & Todd Sanders Jay Berger
February 17 Chris Batterbee & Chris Rogers Lew Farrell
February 24 Adam Beers & Todd Sanders Tom Gilbert

Bulletin Buddy Note-Taking Form (also at front desk)

At any time don't be surprised if a new member offers to bump a designated Bulletin Buddy for 50/50 sales or note-taking opportunities. We know you will happily step aside to enable their progress against new member orientation program (red badge).

If you wish to be added to the rotation please contact Nancy Thornton.

If a date you've been assigned is not convenient, we appreciate your initiative to exchange with a fellow Rotarian.

Join us at Winter Social

Our annual winter social is always a fun evening out with our fabulous Sunrise Rotary friends!

We are repeating last year's approach of holding our Winter Social downtown as part of restaurant week--Saturday, February 27th.

The Franklin has once again offered us the privacy of their upper level dining room (the indoors one - don't panic).

Cocktails at 6pm

Dinner at 7pm

Please sign up online (see link in our Events calendar) so we can give them an accurate headcount.

On a related note--at our meeting last week you heard Becky Ewing RAVE about the FABULOUS Lebanese dinner which she bid on at last year's winter social. The dinner she referenced was donated by Vic and Georgia Geha as part of the on-site silent auction. For those that are new to the club, members donate items which often include donations of fun experiences, like VIc's dinner. Proceeds of the silent auction are directed to Rotary Foundation Annual Fund to help us achieve the required $100 per capita annual giving level to make us eligible for matching grants. If you have something you'd like to donate, please contact Nancy.

Meeting Notes & Announcements

Visiting Rotarians:
None

Guests:
Dave Burgan (guest of Chris Gutowksi) and baby Dominic

50/50 Raffle:
Kathy Johnson was the lucky winner of $34 proceeds

Announcements:
  1. President Craig asked club members to consider ways we might engage in support of the water crisis in Flint. Mark O'Reilly conveyed his concerns that we not strictly focus on short-term water supply but also be sensitive to longer-term health needs as result of the lead contamination. Nancy mentioned that the Rotary Club of Flint has outlined a series of options for support and these are available for review at their club and district website. Craig mentioned this will be something the Board will discuss at their upcoming meeting.
  2. The Club Board will meet next week at 5pm on February 2nd. Please note the location will be at Traverse RePro (Sean's office) 1373 Barlow Street. All members are welcomed. New members are encouraged to attend to satisfy club orientation requirements.
Program:

Our guest speaker was Dayna Ryan, Regional Director of 'Artists Creating Together.'
Artists Creating Together, also known as ACT-Grand Traverse (ACT-GT), provides access and opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to experience and grow through the arts. Over the past 15 years, ACT-GT has touched the lives of thousands of children and adults with disabilities in northwest lower Michigan through music, dance, drama, creative writing and visual art.
ACT services about 2,500 people. They partner with people with, and without disabilities and focus on abilities and self expression of people that have disabilities. Some of their services include:
  • Providing an artist in residence to classroms
  • Coordinate the "Kids on the Block" puppet program providing programs to 1,500 kids about divorce, anti-bullying etc.
  • Host four dances annually for older teens and adults in the community, providing a social opportunity and also respite for their families.
  • Partnerships with other local groups, such as Zonta's Festival of Trees; Elmer's (note the fun painted trucks)
Their next major event is a valentine's themed dance scheduled for February 11th at the Elks Lodge (snow date of February 18th). All Rotarian's are welcomed to attend.
Volunteers can assist with individual programs or may sign up for longer-term commitments.
