Support Rotary in Traverse City!

Rotary Show is THIS WEEK!!

A little song, a little dance — no one is safe, regardless of stance! The 74th Annual Rotary Show is bringing back edgy local satire to lace a delightful evening of variety entertainment, featuring the News at 9ish with Stone Petoskey and Maria Benzonia, the baffling powers of magician Ben Whiting, eclectic indie folk rock blues fusion phenom Blake Elliott (Wednesday and Thursday nights), 10-year-old bluegrass prodigy Nic Carman (Friday and Saturday nights), Drive South, and so much more. Proceeds are used to grant money to local organizations doing important things in arts and culture, basic human needs, education, the environment, health and safety, and recreation.

This year’s Rotary Show will be held Wednesday, April, 27 to Saturday, April 30 at State Theatre in downtown Traverse City. The pre-show begins at 7:30 pm, followed by the Mighty Rotary Chorus taking the stage at 8:00 pm.

Reserved seating tickets are available for $15 through the State Theatre box office, either in person or online here.

Bulletin Buddy Note-Taking Form (also at front desk)

At any time don't be surprised if a new member offers to bump a designated Bulletin Buddy for 50/50 sales or note-taking opportunities. We know you will happily step aside to enable their progress against new member orientation program (red badge).

If you wish to be added to the rotation please contact Nancy Thornton.

If a date you've been assigned is not convenient, we appreciate your initiative to exchange with a fellow Rotarian.

Meeting Notes & Announcements

Visiting Rotarians: None

Guests: Spencer Raetz

50/50 Raffle: Becky Smits was the lucky winner of $32 and she donated the proceeds to Andrew Shotwell who is 'raising bail' for the MDA Lock Up fundraiser.

Announcements:

  • There is a 5/14 work bee at the former coal docks/Discovery Center (typically 9am to noon)
  • Save the date for the grand opening of the expanded Discovery Center to include the former Coal Docks acquisition on Tuesday, June 7th. Festivities begin with the TC Noon club program (on-site noon to 1:30) and activities for the public will be from 1:30 to 7:00pm. We will need to provide a headcount of members interested in attending the club program so that catering can abe adjusted as needed.
  • Craig reminded us that there will be an all Traverse City Rotary meeting at noon on Friday May 20th, noon, at Park Place Dome. This meeting may replace our regularly scheduled weekly meeting (to be determined). Our featured speaker will be Dr. John Modlin, Polio Eradication Director for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who will be in town delivering the International Affairs Forum program Thursday evening May 19th.
Program - Sunrise Rotary Strategic Plan Review (Craig Weckler & Linda Raetz)

Craig and Linda led us in a review of the strategic plans from 2010 and 2014. The club has been doing great things since we began 17 years ago!  We took some time to revisit the goals and vision of the club to make sure we are all on the same page as we move forward.

Historically, we have focused on 4 main areas: fresh water; youth; global service; and community service.

  • We have an amazing youth exchange program, in collaboration with the other Traverse City clubs.  Every year we send kids to other countries and host exchange students here.  We help local youth through our Backpacks for Kids program.
  • Our global service team has taken us to Honduras to put in water filters.  We are in the planning stages to do another global service project in Malawi in 2017.  One of the Club goals is to have 100% member participation in one form or another – from participation in fundraising, to support/encouragement, to actually going to Malawi.
  • The fresh water/community service team sets up service opportunities like the upcoming work bee at the Discovery Center on May 14 and the Kid’s Free Fishing day in June.  We historically have done bell ringing for Salvation Army, collected soap and shampoos for the homeless, and provided food for the weekend for school aged children through Blessings in a Backpack.
  • The membership team has helped many new members join the club and get engaged in activities.

There was a survey that was completed by each club member during the presentation, giving each of us the opportunity to weigh in on the priorities for the coming year as well as suggestions to improve our club. The results will be compiled and shared with the club.

At the conclusion of the presentation, the club was asked if we should do another strategic plan by bringing in someone from Rotary or similar outside group.  The vote taken at that time (yes/no) resulted in an even tie.  More input will be necessary before further action is taken.
