Fellow TBS Rotarian Tom Gilbert of TC Retreat Sober Living House
-
Tom shared his personal story of addiction and recovery and offered these statistics:
-
23 million people in the U.S. are in active addiction
-
1 in 10 is successful with treatment
-
For every one person who is addicted, four family members are intimately affected
-
Tom and his fellow Rotarians celebrated the previous night’s decision by the Traverse City Zoning Board of Appeals to allow the Sober Living House to operate legally.
-
The goal of the house is to provide a quiet, safe neighborhood in which six unrelated individuals can live together and in active recovery. Four are currently in residence.
-
Tom indicated that those addicted to alcohol or drugs don’t get addicted overnight, and their recovery doesn’t happen overnight either.
-
The rules of the house are sobriety, commitment to six months in residence and sex offenders and convicted arsonists are not allowed.
-
A Crowdfunding campaign is underway to raise $60,000 to pay down the mortgage debt. Tax-deductible contributions of any size are welcome: Gofundme.com/tcretreat
