Meeting Notes & Announcements

Visiting Rotarians: PDG Ross Childs, Don Breadon, Bob Hood and Maurie Allen (Rotary Club of Traverse City), and Mark Schwartz (Flint).
 
Guests: Alexis Gutowski (Chris' granddaughter), Kyle Skarshaug (Sean's son) and Neil Nugent, Floyd Brookes, Jim Brahe and Marty Chirgwin  of the Cherry Capital Men's Chorus.

Announcements:
  • Sunrise at Sunset will be next Thursday, 5pm at Apache Trout Grilld
  • Reminder - there is no meeting July 6th. We will be joining Traverse City Rotarians on Tuesday, July 5th, at the Cherry Festival Beer Tent.
  • Community Service committee is enlisting volunteers for July 18th Adopt-a-Highway cleanup. Group will convene at 5pm. Project takes about an hour and Craig suggested everyone might stop afterwards for refreshments. Signup sheet was circulated.
  • Next week's meeting is our official changing of the guard. Please be sure to be in attendance to thank our outgoing officers/directors and to install our new team.
  • Anne Bonney shared that the Life Leadership Conference held this past weekend was simply AMAZING. There were over 150 youth leaders and an outstanding team of facilitators. She's convince she probably got more out of it than the kids, and thanked the club for having sponsored the students which participated through our 'scholarships.' 
Program June 22:
Maurie Allen shared some of the history of the Cherry Capital Men's Chorus which celebrates "Fifty Years of Harmony" with a special concert this Saturday evening at 7pm. We were serenaded by the "Happy Hour" quartet, one of the barbershop quartets within the chorus. Tickets are $15 ($10 for children) available at Captain's Quarters, or through mynorthtickets.com. 
 
 
Program June 15:
Dayna Ryan, newly inducted member of Traverse City Central High Schools hall of fame was the speaker on June 15. Dana has worked as a coordinator for "the Dream Team" for the past two years. The Dream Team matches special needs athletes with local baseball and softball high school athletes. This partnership allows all athletes to participate in monthly games throughout the spring and summer. The Dream Team received a $1000 grant from the Traverse Bay Sunrise Foundation to help purchase needed equipment for athletes to enjoy their game experience to the fullest.

Announcements:

  • Anne Bonney is collecting school supplies to take to Malawi for their new school. She is collecting: school supplies, paint brushes (for painting walls), hammers, soccer balls and pumps, and bubbles. All items are due by June 27th.
  • The Community Service Committee Meeting has been changed to next Thursday, June 16th at the Coke Plant (1031 Hastings Street) from 7:30-8:15am. Please use the side door to enter the building. New committee members are always welcome.
  • The Global Service meeting is at noon on Thursday, June 9th at Baird Investments (1001 Bay Street).
  • Sunrise Rotary now has a master calendar! You can find it in the newsletter as well as the Sunrise Rotary website. Please fill in committee meetings and activities!
  • Joy Evans’ application was approved at the last Board Meeting. It will be on display for the next few meetings. Please review it if you have any questions.
  • Kid’s Free Fishing Day is on Saturday, June 18th at the Maritime Academy Campus from 10am-2pm. Even if you did not sign up, feel free to come and volunteer.
  • A former Rotary Exchange student, Vojta graduated this spring with his Bachelors in Science. He is studying for his tests to go to study for his master’s degree in Prague, and is interning this summer.

  • Sunrise Board meeting is Tuesday, June 7 at Linda Raetz' office (1102 Cass St.) at 5pm. All are welcome!
  • Family Fishing Day is June 18. Volunteers are still needed.
  • Mark O'Reilly introduced Life Leadership attendee Cheyenne Nagy.  Active in a variety of clubs and programs including Honor Roll;Choir;STEM. Volunteers at Tender Care. Is interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine and has a summer job at Bay Area Veterinary Clinic. Enjoys downhill skiing, fishing and Tae Kwon Do as hobbies.
Special Presentation:
President Craig Weckler honored Nancy Thornton and Amy Pullen for their deep dedication to our club. Amy is moving to Bend, OR (and will transfer to a club there); Nancy is starting a new local 'hybrid' Rotary club which meet twice a month (one online, one service project). Both women exemplify Service Above Self and will be greatly missed but we are all thrilled for their new Rotary adventures!
